Roland Weight has developed a method of painting which explores the effects of light reflected from objects. The vast colours and forms of nature inspire Roland to paint. “The way light falls on things is what really gets me going,” says Roland. “Even in the manmade environment, the way light falls has a beautiful ease about it. Light never makes things look hard and sharp, shadows seem to fall softly and elucidate forms; their beauty emerges.”
“Painting and sculpting helps me feel less anxious. Art has become so much a part of my life; if I haven’t painted for a while I feel unwell.”
I use realist and figurative motifs as expressive symbols to carry spatial and material qualities past the resistance of non recognition.
• In my abstract paintings I attempt new directions through colour and spatial order; I am influenced by European and American modernists.
• My steel assemblages explore the subject / material interplay. They can be viewed as three-dimensional drawings using steel to shape the space around it.
• My sculptures have conceptual links to modernist collage and offer a bridge between abstract painting and sculpture through assemblage.
“When I show my work to people it makes it better; it gives insight into another way of seeing and perceiving it, whether people like it or not. Exhibiting is an essential part of doing the work because if art is not seen it might as well not exist. Showing my art is as important as the stretcher or the easel. There is no use hiding it under my bed”.
