Sandra's comment:
"Almighty God created sexual desire in ten parts; then he gave nine parts to women and one to men." said Ali, the husband of Muhammad's beloved daughter Fatima and founder of Shiite Islam (from the book "Nine parts of Desire" by Geraldine Brooks).
This work, first shown at Rohtas Gallery, Islamabad, Pakistan, is a screen constructed of pieces of green silk waxed onto a sheet of black silk, with a rectangle of intricate pattern cut into it at approximately eye-level. The work is suspended from the ceiling away from the wall, so that one could walk around it. The cut-out rectangle is lit from the front to cast a shadow on the wall behind. The design for the cut-out is a combination of traditional Pakistani woodblock patterns used for printing fabric and the words 'nine parts of desire', written in Arabic calligraphy.
