ARTIST Esha Xavier
Qinn The ever present theme which
underpins my work is essentially referencing 'vanitas', the beauty and
transience of all life. Life, death and transformation are formal and
innate preoccupations of my work and my life. I use paper in my work, because it is simultaneously fragile and yet can accomplish a presence of immense power. It is a visual expression of age and time's ravages accepted for what it is and seen as beautiful. My art also uses layers like the ancient dance of the veils, where each new veil reveals another layer, both ambiguous and mysterious. It also imitates archaeological digs in much the same way, Where age and uncovering treasures
are both relevant. The other element of my work is text, which is sometimes legible and other times purposely illegible. Often I use calligraphy or other ancient texts which have the mnemonic power of symbols and ciphers and can transcend any conscious physical searching out of my ancestral roots. I also use calligraphy because every stroke has a meaning, just as every action in life has an equal reaction. |
