Art is one of the most beautiful and personal things you can give someone. It says something about you, about them, and the relationship between you – whether it be professional, romantic or simply appreciative.
What gift, then, could be more appropriate to give to a man whom you have worked with for over 20 years? A man whose work you, and many other people, owe so much to and appreciate so highly?
The gift of art is as close to perfection as you can get–somewhere out there, the exactly right piece exists (or can be made to exist). In this particular case, a special gift was needed for Bob Kennedy, to acknowledge the 20 years he had served as Chairman of Beach Energy, as a symbol of how much the company recognized the value of not only his work, but of him as a person.

During our consultation with Beach on what sort of artwork they wanted, something caught our eye; hiding in their logo (not particularly stealthily) was a Nautilus.
 

A Nautilus, or ‘living fossil’, is a beautiful example of mathematics at work, almost perfectly showcasing a logarithmic spiral in its shell, and as a species has not needed to evolve much for hundreds of millions of years. Upon seeing this, our minds recalled a piece glass sculpture by one of our artists sent to us a few years ago: those who follow our updates regularly may remember Stephen Skillitzi’s ‘Self Reflective Spiral’. Originally created with both Fibonacci and logarithmic curves in mind, the piece spoke speaks of the same curled elegance that makes the Nautilus so recognizable, and we immediately suggested it as a piece for Beach Energy to consider.
 

Happily, they loved it. And so, we brought the piece in (which was more difficult than you’d think – glass is surprisingly heavy, and, of course, quite fragile!), and were privileged to be there when the piece was presented to Bob Kennedy, who loved it just as much, if not more, than those who had chosen it for him had.

Since the piece is quite difficult to transport safely, we moved it from the main office of Beach Energy to Bob Kennedy’s private home, where he seemed just as pleased with it as he was the first time – always a good thing in the world of art!
