In Business' Article on ART LOGIC and BDO's newest exhibition
A new art rental exhibition, curated by Adelaide-based specialist Art Logic, has been turning heads and creating conversations at the offices of BDO Accountants in the Adelaide CBD, according to Art Logic principal, Jacqueline Mitchell.
The sculptures by Art Logic’s newest local artist Egbert Wellmann are strategically placed to make the most of one of their defining characteristics; the use of what the art world calls ‘Negative Space’. Interestingly negative space has no negative connotation. It's actually a smart artistic tool and refers to the space around and between the sculptures, Jacqueline says.
Inspired by the landscape of the Australian Outback, Wellmann uses Negative Space to his great advantage, creating metal sculptures which use the space not filled as part of the finished work. The familiar shape of humanoid figures makes use of the viewer’s natural assumption of form, whether that form is outlined, filled or only suggested.
Making use of the dramatic silhouettes of Wellmann’s pieces, Art Logic has arranged them before stark white walls and bright windows; placements which force the sharp contrast inherent in the pieces to catch the viewer’s eye. With these choices, the pieces can become as large or small as the viewer decides, as the backdrop becomes part of the sculpture.
If you’re lucky enough to be visiting BDO’s offices, or feel like making a detour to the 7th floor of 420 King William St, make sure that you take some time to admire the artwork and see how your mind fills in the blanks.
