Security Guards Can Be Charming

Far too early last Sunday morning, three other ART LOGICites and I met outside one of Adelaide’s skyscrapers. I came equipped with my police clearance certificate and my Malaysian passport. FIVE security guards awaited us, looking quite the scary part in their black uniforms, high tech walkie-talkies and their guns and sticks ( …hmmh maybe the latter apparel was just my imagination). Their behavior failed to meet my expectations: they all smiled profusely, were extremely charming, and helped us cart in the mountains of gear we needed for the day.

We were at our newest client’s offices and I, the freshest Art Logic crew member family, finally got my hands off the computer. I got to experience what ART LOGIC really does. This was a brand new art rental client, which meant that our strong handsome carpenters installed an art hanging system for them: 68 metres of it.

I got to help them: fun indeed - my leg muscles tell me they appreciated the magnificent workout they got going up and down those ladders. Then we installed the new client’s art rental exhibit – 19 artworks. The results were stunning. The opportunity to see the artworks in the flesh (rather than just entering their details into our access database and then uploading them to the website) was eye-opening. The website photos are great, but they really don’t do the artworks justice.

The artists themselves brought the artworks by, with the guards escorting them up and down. I learnt that these artistic masterminds were not only talented, but very humble and accessible – definitely nicer to meet them in real life than on the computer screen!

The empty walls looked so different with the hung art. The office atmosphere was completely transformed!

Our 10-hour ordeal in the offices of SA Health’s ITC services was worth it. Even the guards agreed – after all, they had their share of effort by ferrying the team the art and our installation equipment left, right, up and down with their swipe cards! Two of the guards, both of them called David, talked about going halves in buying an artwork together. David 1 would get it for the first six months and David 2 for the next 6 months! David 1 had something smart and interesting to say about each artwork - turns out he’s an art collector, what a surprise.

As for me, I’ve just got to wait for four months; then I get to help hang up 19 new, fun artworks at SA Health’s ITC Services!
